Taxonomy
Protosirex was named by Rasnitsyn (1969). Its type is Protosirex xyelopterus. It is the type genus of Protosiricidae.
It was assigned to Gigasiricidae by Rasnitsyn (1969), Carpenter (1992); and to Protosiricidae by Rasnitsyn and Zhang (2004), Taeger et al. (2010).
