Sepulca was named by Rasnitsyn (1968). It is the type genus of Sepulcinae, Sepulcidae.
It was assigned to Sepulcidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Sepulcinae by Rasnitsyn (1968), Rasnitsyn (1993) and Taeger et al. (2010).
