Kempendaja was named by Rasnitsyn (1968). Its type is Kempendaja jacutensis.
It was assigned to Anaxyelidae by Carpenter (1992); to Kempendajinae by Rasnitsyn (1980) and Kopylov (2019); and to Anaxyelinae by Rasnitsyn (1968), Taeger et al. (2010) and Gao et al. (2021).
