Taxonomy
Sirex was named by Linnaeus (1761). It is extant. It is the type genus of Siricides, Siricoidea, Siricinae.
It was assigned to Synistata by Fabricius (1775); to Hymenoptera by Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Harris (1780) and Latreille (1796); to Siricidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Siricinae by Maa (1949) and Taeger et al. (2010).
