Ephialtites was named by Meunier (1903). Its type is Ephialtites jurassicus. It is the type genus of Ephialtitidae, Ephialtitinae.
It was assigned to Ephialtitidae by Handlirsch (1906), Whalley and Jarzembowski (1985), Carpenter (1992) and Rasnitsyn and Zhang (2010); and to Ephialtitinae by Rasnitsyn and Martínez-Delclòs (2000) and Li et al. (2015).
