Megalyra was named by Westwood (1832). It is extant. It is the type genus of Megalyridae, Megalyroidea, Megalyrinae, Megalyrini.

It was assigned to Megalyridae by Carpenter (1992); to Megalyrini by Perrichot (2009); and to Megalyrini by Brazidec et al. (2024).
