Cretocleistogaster was named by Rasnitsyn (1975). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Cretocleistogastrinae.
It was assigned to Cleistogastrinae by Rasnitsyn (1975); to Megalyridae by Carpenter (1992); to Praeaulacidae by Rasnitsyn (1988), Li et al. (2018); and to Cretocleistogastrinae by Rasnitsyn (1990), Jouault et al. (2020).
