Rhyssa was named by Gravenhorst (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhyssinae, Rhyssides.

It was reranked as Pimpla (Rhyssa) by Heer (1867).

It was assigned to Pimpla by Heer (1867); to Ichneumonidae by Carpenter (1992); to Rhyssinae by Spasojevic et al. (2018); and to Rhyssini by Klopfstein and Spasojevic (2019).
