Indri was named by Geoffroy and Cuvier (1796) [also attributed to Lacépède 1799]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Indriidae.
It was assigned to Lichanotina by Gray (1825); and to Indriidae by Schwarz (1931) and Karanth et al. (2005).
