Simonsius was named by Gingerich (1978). It is not extant. Its type is Parapithecus grangeri.

It was synonymized subjectively with Parapithecus by Simons (2001).

It was assigned to Parapithecinae by Beard et al. (2016), Mattingly et al. (2021).
