Taxonomy
Grypophyllum was named by Wedekind (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 680]. Its type is Grypophyllum denckmanni.

It was corrected as Gryphophyllum by Hill (1981).

It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); to Ptenophyllinae by Hill (1981), Kiessling (2003); to Ptenophyllidae by Brownlaw and Jell (2008); and to Anthozoa by Zhao and Zhu (2010).

  • Neostringophyllum was named by Wedekind (1922).

    It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthophyllum by Birenheide (1972); it was reranked as Acanthophyllum (Neostringophyllum) by Zhen (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Grypophyllum by Brownlaw and Jell (2008).

    It was assigned to Rugosa by Wedekind (1922); and to Acanthophyllum by Zhen (1994).
  • Hooeiphyllum was named by Taylor (1950). It is not extant.
