Taxonomy
Phoca fasciata was named by Zimmermann (1783). It is extant. It is the type species of Histriophoca.

It was recombined as Phoca (Histriophoca) fasciata by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Friant (1947); it was recombined as Histriophoca fasciata by Gill (1873), Allen (1880), Allen (1902), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Davis et al. (2004), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Cullen et al. (2014), Berta et al. (2018), Kienle and Berta (2019).

Synonyms
  • Phoca equestris was named by Pallas (1831). It is extant.

    It was recombined as Pagophilus equestris by Gray (1871); it was synonymized subjectively with Histriophoca fasciata by Allen (1880).
