Astrea cristata was named by Goldfuss (1826). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Synastrea cristata by d'Orbigny (1850), Geyer (1955); it was recombined as Thamnasteria cristata by Geyer (1954); it was recombined as Fungiastraea cristata by Rosendahl (1985).
