Cretabythus was named by Evans (1973). It is the type genus of Cretabythinae.
It was assigned to Bethylidae by Rasnitsyn (1988); to Scolebythidae by Evans (1973) and Carpenter (1992); to Holopsenellinae by Engel et al. (2016), Azevedo et al. (2018) and Colombo et al. (2020); and to Cretabythinae by Brazidec et al. (2023).
