Protopristocera was named by Brues (1923). It is the type genus of Protopristocerinae.
It was assigned to Pristocerinae by Sorg (1988); to Bethylidae by Carpenter (1992), Azevedo and Azar (2012); and to Protopristocerinae by Nagy (1974), Azevedo et al. (2018).
