Archaeopone was named by Dlussky (1975). It is not extant. Its type is Archaeopone kzylzharica.

It was assigned to Ponerinae by Dlussky (1975); to Armaniidae by Dlussky (1983); to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Armaniinae by Bolton (2003) and Bolton (2012).
