Leptomyrmex was named by Mayr (1862). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leptomyrmicini.
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Dolichoderini by Bolton (2003); and to Leptomyrmicini by Emery (1913), Bolton (2012).
