Taxonomy
Sphecomyrma was named by Wilson and Brown (1967). Its type is Sphecomyrma freyi. It is the type genus of Sphecomyrminae, Sphecomyrmini.
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Sphecomyrmini by Bolton (2003), Bolton (2012), Borysenko (2017); and to Sphecomyrminae by Wilson and Brown (1967), Wilson (1985), Engel and Grimaldi (2005), Boudinot et al. (2020), Sosiak et al. (2024).
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Sphecomyrmini by Bolton (2003), Bolton (2012), Borysenko (2017); and to Sphecomyrminae by Wilson and Brown (1967), Wilson (1985), Engel and Grimaldi (2005), Boudinot et al. (2020), Sosiak et al. (2024).
