Taxonomy

Polistes was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Polistini, Polistides.

It was assigned to Vespariae by Latreille (1802); to Vespinae by Statz (1936); to Vespidae by Theobald (1937), Piton (1940), Carpenter (1992); and to Polistini by Takahashi and Aiba (2023).

Synonyms

Polistes primitiva was named by Heer (1864). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Oeningen (Zurich collection), which is in a Sarmatian crater lake limestone in the Upper Freshwater-Molasse Formation of Germany.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Heer (1864).
