Pompilus was named by Fabricius (1798). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pompilii, Pompilinae.
It was assigned to Sphegimae by Latreille (1802); to Pompilidae by Theobald (1937), Carpenter (1992); and to Pompilinae by Waichert et al. (2015).
