Schistomerus was named by Palmer (1957). It is not extant. Its type is Schistomerus californense. It is the type genus of Schistomerini.
It was assigned to Dytiscidae by Carpenter (1992) and Park and Downing (2001); and to Schistomerini by Palmer (1957) and Nilsson (2001).
