Taxonomy
Asterosmilia irregularis was named by Cairns (1995). Its type locality is Lomas del Mar, eastern sequence, sample 1119, Limon Basin, which is in a Pleistocene transition zone/lower shoreface siltstone in the Moin Formation of Costa Rica.
