Loxodonta cyclotis (African forest elephant)

Taxonomy
Elephas capensis cyclotis was named by Matschie (1900) [also referred to as Elephas cyclotis in the same paper (see Allen 1936)]. It is extant. Its type locality is Yaunde region, which is in a Holocene terrestrial horizon in Cameroon.

It was recombined as Elephas cyclotis by Matschie (1900); it was recombined as Elephas africanus cyclotis by Lydekker (1907); it was recombined as Loxodonta africana cyclotis by Allen and Coolidge (1930); it was recombined as Loxodonta cyclotis by Frade (1931), Allen (1936), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Rohland et al. (2010).
