Protocardia gurabica was named by Maury (1917). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Protocardia (Lophocardium) gurabica by Olsson (1922); it was recombined as Lophocardium gurabicum by Olsson (1964) and Woodring (1982); it was recombined as Nemocardium (Lophocardium) gurabica by Vokes (1989); it was recombined as Nemocardium (Lophocardium) gurabicum by Clark and Durham (1946) and Moore (2003).
