Astrea dissimilis was named by Michelin (1846). Its type specimen is neotype MNHN.F.A59986, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dendrastrea dissimilis by Michelin (1846), D'Orbigny (1849), d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Isastraea dissimilis by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857).
