Pleuronectites was named by Schlotheim (1820) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr l Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 1227].

It was reranked as Hinnites (Pleuronectites) by Futterer (1897).

It was assigned to Hinnites by Futterer (1897); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pectinidae by Hayami (1975), Newell and Boyd (1995), Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
