Stegopteridae was named by Sharov (1961).

It was reranked as the subfamily Stegopterinae by Aristov (2004).

It was assigned to Protorthoptera by Carpenter (1992); to Grylloblattina by Storozhenko (1997), Storozhenko (1998); and to Geinitziidae by Aristov (2004).
