Apolymetis was named by Salisbury (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 96]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Tellinidae by Durham (1944); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macominae by Rosenberg et al. (2006).
