Califadesma was named by Saul (1989) [Sepkoski's age data: K u Sepkoski's reference number: ZR90]. Its type is Califadesma elafium.

It was assigned to Mesodesmatidae by Saul (1989); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).

L. R. Saul 1989A mesodesmatid with the resilifer posteriorly slanted and the two cardinal teeth on the hinge plate. Posteriorly the shell has a double siphonal fold.
