Ethmocardium was named by White (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Cardium (Ethmocardium) by Russell and Landes (1937); it was reranked as Granocardium (Ethmocardium) by Speden (1970).

It was assigned to Cardium by Russell and Landes (1937); to Granocardium by Speden (1970); to Cardiinae by Vokes (1980); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
