Gari was named by Schumacher (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R]. It is extant. Its type is Gari vulgaris.
It was assigned to Psammobiinae by Vokes (1980), Squires (1984), Squires (1987); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Psammobiidae by Woodring (1982), Gazdzicki and Pugaczewska (1984), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992), Wienrich (1999), Moore (2003); and to Garinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
