Madrepora cucullata was named by Ellis and Solander (1786). It is extant.

It was recombined as Agaricia cucullata by Lamarck (1801); it was recombined as Mycedium cucullata by Verrill (1901); it was recombined as Helioseris cucullata by Goreau and Wells (1967); it was recombined as Leptoseris cucullata by Veron (2000).
