Ovojassus was named by Hamilton (1990). Its type is Ovojassus concavifer. It is the type genus of Ovojassini.

It was assigned to Ovojassini by Hamilton (1990); to Cicadellidae by Hamilton (1992); and to Ovojassinae by Dietrich et al. (2017).
