Neolepton was named by Monterosato (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neoleptonidae by Vokes (1980), Beu et al. (1990), Lamprell and Healy (1998), Coan et al. (2000) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
