Melipona was named by Iliger (1806). It is extant. It is the type genus of Meliponidae, Meliponites, Meliponina, Meliponitae.

It was assigned to Meliponinae by Cockerell (1908); and to Meliponitae by Engel (2021) and Engel et al. (2023).
