Taxonomy
Orthocardium was named by Tremlett (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Vepricardium (Orthocardium) by Cox et al. (1969); it was reranked as Cardium (Orthocardium) by Keen (1980) and Le Renard and Pacaud (1995).

It was assigned to Vepricardium by Cox et al. (1969); to Cardiinae by Vokes (1980); to Cardium by Keen (1980) and Le Renard and Pacaud (1995); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Orthocardiinae by Schneider (2002) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
