Taxonomy

Coenagrionidae was named by Kirby (1890). It is extant.

It was assigned to Odonata by Zhang (1989); to Zygoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Coenagrionoidea by Bechly (2000), Bechly (2007).

Subtaxa

Synonyms

Agrionidae was named by Leach (1815). It is extant.

It was replaced with Coenagrionidae by Bechly (2007).

It was assigned to Odonata by Cockerell (1908), Cockerell (1909), Cockerell (1921).
Enallagma oligocena was named by Cockerell and Andrews (1916). Its type specimen is BMNH I.8631, a wing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bembridge Marls (Brodie coll), which is in a Priabonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Bouldnor Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Fleck (2014).
