Xenopterum was named by Riek (1955). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Xenopteridae, Xenopterinae, Xenopteroidea.
It was assigned to Xenopteridae by Riek (1955); to Triassomanteidae by Sharov (1968) and Carpenter (1992); and to Xenopterinae by Gorochov (1989), Gorochov (1995), Wappler (2001) and Gorochov (2005).
