Anthophoridae was named by Kirby (1837). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Anthophorinae by Theobald (1937); it was reranked as the tribe Anthophorini by Engel (2001), Engel (2005), Michez et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Apidae by Theobald (1937); to Apoidea by Cockerell (1906), Zeuner and Manning (1976); to Apocrita by Carpenter (1992); to Apiti by Engel (2005); and to Apinae by Engel (2001), Michez et al. (2009).
