Procercopis was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Procercopis alutacea. It is the type genus of Procercopidae.

It was assigned to Procercopidae by Handlirsch (1906), Bode (1953), Shcherbakov (1988), Hamilton (1992), Chen et al. (2020).
