Anthonomus was named by Germar (1817). It is extant. It is the type genus of Anthonomini.
It was assigned to Curculionidae by Scudder (1890); to Coleoptera by Cockerell (1925); and to Anthonomini by Scudder (1893), Bouchard et al. (2011), Legalov (2015), Poinar and Legalov (2015), Legalov and Poinar (2016), Legalov (2019), Legalov and Poinar (2020).
