Pterocardia was named by Bayan (1874) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Apti]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Megalodontidae by Kiessling (2003); and to Pterocardiidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
