Heterolimulus was named by Vía Boada and Villalta (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 359,1066]. It is the type genus of Heterolimulidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Tachypleus by Lamsdell (2016), Dunlop et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Heterolimulidae by Vía Boada and Villalta (1966); to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Limulidae by Lamsdell (2020), Bicknell et al. (2021).
It was synonymized subjectively with Tachypleus by Lamsdell (2016), Dunlop et al. (2020).
