Segestriidae was named by Simon (1893). It is extant. Its type is Segestria.

It was reranked as the subfamily Segestrinae by Straus (1967).

It was assigned to Araneomorphae by Petrunkevitch (1933); to Dysderidae by Straus (1967); and to Dysderoidea by Dunlop et al. (2013), Wheeler et al. (2017) and Magalhaes et al. (2020).
