Mesovelioidea was named by Douglas and Scott (1867). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Gerromorpha by Damgaard (2012).

It was assigned to Gerromorpha by Damgaard et al. (2012), Yao et al. (2012), Johnson et al. (2018), Szwedo (2018).
