Gomphocerus was named by Thunberg (1815). It is extant. It is the type genus of Gomphoceri, Gomphocerini.
It was assigned to Hemiptera by Thunberg (1815); to Truxalinae by Scudder (1890); and to Gomphocerini by Vedenina and Mugue (2011), Storozhenko et al. (2015).
