Karabasia was named by Martynov (1926).

It was assigned to Fulgoridae by Martynov (1926); to Bythoscopinae by Becker-Migdisova (1949); to Karabasiinae by Popov and Shcherbakov (1991); to Heteroptera by Hamilton (1992); and to Karabasiidae by Popov (1985), Dong et al. (2014).
