Rhinoceros hemitoechus was named by Falconer (1868).

It was recombined as Dicerorhinus hemitoechus by Loose (1975); it was recombined as Stephanorhinus hemitoechus by Capasso Barbato and Gliozzi (1995), Lacombat (2005) and Deng et al. (2011).
