Ampyxella was named by Dean (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 378]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Raphiophorinae by Fortey (1975); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Raphiophoridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
