Asaphus was named by Brongniart (1822). Its type is Entomostracites expansus.

It was reranked as Amphion (Asaphus) by Eichwald (1840).

It was assigned to Amphion by Eichwald (1840); to Asaphinae by M'Coy (1849), Henningsmoen (1960) and Owen and Bruton (1980); to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
